Foerstel’s own business development gal, Janell Count, has come up with seven tips for working from home based on her more than 20 years of first-hand experience. Don’t be surprised if she has a couple tips that even experienced remote-workers might learn from!
It helps your mind, and your work, to establish what the new norm looks like. Dedicate a space in your home as your new workspace and keep regular work hours.
Shower and dress in the morning as though you’re going to the office. Don’t get me wrong – I love my jammies, but a regular prep routine can get you in the mindset for a productive day, and helps you feel good about looking your best even on home turf.
Every 2-3 hours, take a break and walk around the house. Toss in a load of laundry, take care of a quick chore, maybe take the dog for a short walk around the block. When you find yourself in need of fresh ideas, a break for your eyes can do wonders.
Try to find a spot in your house where you can work standing. You don’t have to commit to standing all day if you’re not comfortable. Even standing for an hour or two throughout the day can be a great help for your mood, energy, and blood flow!
When we’re surrounded by our favorite snacks and our best at-home meals, it’s tempting to snack. Cut up vegetables and fruits and keep them in the front of the fridge so they are the first thing you see when you open the door. Nuts and berries can also be an excellent, healthy treat. It’s easy to keep hitting the coffee pot, but don’t forget to drink plenty of water as well.
It’s important to give yourself a chance to move. Use exercise equipment you have at home or even just a brisk walk is incredibly beneficial. There are also loads of free online classes right now so take this opportunity to try something new!
We’re all in this together. It’s a tough time on everyone out there, so just keep finding new ways to adapt and remember: this too shall pass.
We know it is an uncertain and challenging time for many, and are always wishing the community a healthy and safe road ahead. Thanks Janell for all these great tips!

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 60’s, Tom developed a strong desire to create positive change for people and planet.
He went on to pursue his passion for art and design at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and worked for design firms in Southern California before moving to Boise, Idaho in the early 80’s. Foerstel Design opened its doors in 1985. Since its inception, the firm has cultivated a bold, happy, forward-looking team focussed on creating distinct and effective work on behalf of their clients.
An integral part of Tom’s philosophy is giving back to the community in which he lives — a company cornerstone that drives Foerstel’s long history of providing pro-bono services to local non-profit humanitarian and arts programs.
One of Tom’s proudest personal achievements is his ability to say Supercalifragilisticexpyalidocious backwards.
